SAN MARCOS, Texas. (Nov. 16, 2016) – In an effort to replace dozens of shade trees damaged by the Memorial Day Flood of 2015, the University Camp at Texas State University has enlisted help from the Blanco River Reforestation Program.
The flood wiped out vegetation along the banks of the Blanco River that flows through the camp, uprooting trees and damaging wildlife habitats. University Camp joined the reforestation project in 2016 early to replace some of these plants.
Hays County worked with TreeFolks, an environmental organization, to approve the program in September 2015 for a reforestation plan along parts of the Blanco River. University Camp, led by John K. Johnson, organized over 50 volunteers to help plant and replace some of the seeds and vegetation that were lost or damaged.
“I don’t think we will be able to get the University Camp back to where it was,” said the assistant Director of Facility Operations at the Student Recreation Center for Texas State University, Jon Hernandez. “But we’re hoping to at least bring back some of the shade and aesthetic beauty to the grounds.”
The University Camp is working to restore the park back to its original beauty so students and alumni can enjoy the Blanco River and other amenities that the University Camp has to offer.
University Camp in Wimberley, Texas, provides students, faculty, staff and alumni with opportunities to experience the beauty of the outdoors in a family-oriented setting. The 126-acre camp overlooks the scenic Blanco River and includes four day-use sites, six campsites, two lodges, and several miles of hiking and biking trails. Reservations are available for groups or individuals and can be made at the Outdoor Center at Sewell Park in nearby San Marcos, home of Texas State University.
