The camp, which was donated to the University in 1958 from the local Boy Scouts, is formerly known as Southwest Texas State University Camp. When Southwest Texas State University became Texas State University in 2003, the camp also changed its name, and has been known as Texas State University camp since. Many students also refer to the campsite as U-Camp.
Access to the University Camp can be reserved through the Outdoor Center located at Sewell park in San Marcos, Texas. Reservations are available to students, faculty, staff, and Texas State Alumni Association members. Reservations may be made in person, during the Outdoor Center's normal hours, or over the phone at 512-245-2004. Reservations must be held with a valid credit card and weekend use of the camp requires registration of both Friday and Saturday nights.
